Why Your Next Great Adventure Is on the Water

Why spend your entire vacation experience on solid ground? Four Seasons resorts around the world are extending their unparalleled hospitality with luxury dive boat charters. Whether it’s snorkelling or sunbathing you’re after, or both, we’ve compiled the ways you can change your perspective on paradise.

Koh Samui yacht

Thailand’s Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is home to 42 uninhabited islands ripe for exploration.

Koh Samui, Thailand

On Samui Island, guests at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui can extend their range with its two yachts. The Minor Affair, a 19.5-metre (64-foot) Sunseeker yacht, accommodates up to 12, with two cabins and a master suite. Its hydraulic swimming platform has a built-in shower, and a Bose sound system is ready to supply your sailing soundtrack.

The Resort’s 12.8-metre (42-foot) charter, the Siam Seas Explorer, has an outdoor deck where you can lie still in the sun. It also happens to be an island-hopping speedboat that can reach up to 44 knots (about 50 mph). The crew – a personal assistant and a deckhand – can provide picnics, full meals and, of course, champagne.

Trips aboard each yacht are fully customizable, but the Resort suggests several itineraries, such as a jaunt to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park – 42 uninhabited islands great for snorkelling, with a chance to dive through a cave to the saltwater Emerald Lake. The yachts also offer sunset cruises and tours around Koh Samui or to Thailand’s southernmost island, Koh Phangan, where every month up to 30,000 people flock to dance at its Full Moon Party.

“Our guests really enjoy the yacht trips to the Ang Thong marine park – it is a beautiful destination with a nice trek and secluded beach,” says Sean Mosher, General Manager of the Resort. “What’s equally impressive is the experienced and knowledgeable crew, especially our captain.”

Explore Lanai’s southern coastline aboard Lanai II, the Resort’s sloop-rigged sailing catamaran.

Lanai, Hawaii

When guests at Four Seasons Resort Lanai board Lanai II, a 65-foot (20-metre) sloop-rigged sailing catamaran, they’ll experience the pristine waters surrounding Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island in complete luxury. Set off for a three-hour snorkel sail to Kaunolu on the southern shore. This heritage site was King Kamehameha’s summer retreat, and the waters were a favourite fishing spot of his royal entourage. Swim along coastal reefs teeming with brilliantly coloured fish and wildlife – and perhaps catch a glimpse of humpback whales that frequent the waters seasonally, from December to mid-April. Snorkel gear, wetsuits and stand-up paddleboards are all provided, as is a picnic lunch on board before heading back to shore.

For an unforgettable evening, take Lanai II out for a two-hour sunset cruise to sip cocktails as the sun falls below the horizon, enjoy delicious pupus (appetizers) and watch schools of spinner dolphins frolic in the surf. Guests can also book a private charter on Lanai I, the Resort’s 50-foot (15-metre) sailing catamaran, to snorkel, scuba-dive, fish, whale-watch, or just relax and take in views of the beautiful Lanai coastline.

“An ocean adventure is one of the best ways to explore the southern coastline of Lanai,” says Captain Kamalani Ranis of Lanai Ocean Sports. “Just minutes from the harbour are some of the best dive sites in the world, resident spinner dolphins and some of the highest sea cliffs in the world. All experiences with our Lanai-based crew are unique.”

A private boat makes its way around the coast of Bora Bora

The Resort’s Andreyale Bateaux Taxis were modelled after 1920s New York City commuter boats.

Bora Bora, South Pacific

At Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, up to 20 people can embark on two-hour excursions aboard a custom-built, 11.8-metre (39-foot) Andreyale Bateaux Taxi. The taxi boats – Heinoanoa, Leana, Poeiti and Vaihani – were inspired by New York City commuter boats that, in the 1920s, transported Wall Street executives from Long Island to New York’s Financial District. But the 21st-century models are made with mahogany, teak and stainless steel, and they stick to the South Pacific.

The Andreyales serve as transfers between the Resort and Bora Bora Airport, and are also available for private charters to take guests snorkelling with rays and sharks, deep-sea fishing, or touring the area with a local guide. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora has its own fleet for one-hour to full-day excursions. The latter choice is easily the most popular.

“A private Sunset Sushi and Champagne Cruise is an incredibly romantic experience,” says Romain Chanet, General Manager of the Resort. “Not only do you get to see the beautiful colours of Bora Bora’s lagoon and sky change with the sunset, but you get to do so with your loved one while enjoying the perfect pairing of fresh sushi and champagne. It’s truly one of Bora Bora’s most memorable experiences.”

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Why it’s special: The world’s largest coral reef and more than 3,000 individual reef systems and coral cays

The Great Barrier Reef is perhaps the most iconic diving and snorkelling destination in the world, and the exceptional beauty of this natural wonder warrants the reputation that precedes it. The easiest way to experience the grandeur of this underwater marvel is to join any of the boat tours that take snorkellers to various spots along the reef. Most snorkellers and divers choose to base themselves in Cairns, but Port Douglas and Townsville also offer easy access to beautiful swims.

If you prefer to stay as close to the action as possible, try a visit to the small but lovely Heron Island, a coral cay located at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll have the opportunity to mingle with 60 percent of the species of fish that live along the Great Barrier Reef. Easy-to-access snorkelling spots right off the beach are notable bonuses.

Punta Mita, Mexico

Why it’s special: Rock formations and waterways near an uninhabited island, and underwater swim-through tunnels

Right at the heart of this gem is Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, the perfect jumping-off point for aquatic adventures in the region, even offering prime snorkelling for beginners near the Resort.

World Class

During a recent trip, my sons gingerly made their way through the rice paddies at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai as a guide pointed out the long grasses in the waters around their boots, the sounds of the resident buffalo in the distance carrying across the still air. As we walked, our guide explained how the animals and the farmers work together, and how much land is required to create a bag of rice we’d purchase without a thought at a supermarket back home. Later, we sampled the product: In a cooking class, the executive chef showed the boys how to make mango sticky rice and other tasty Thai dishes. We headed home with recipes, a new appreciation for a dinner staple, and knowledge of another culture and way of life.

Chi 1214 970x540

Our visit to Thailand was just one stop on our family’s trip around the world. Without class curricula, we let the journey school our sons. We learned new languages at playgrounds and restaurants, explored conservation efforts in wild spaces, tested our math skills while figuring out currencies, and practised reading with signs at museum exhibits.

Over the past year, terms like “remote schooling” have become a part of many families’ vocabularies. But for us and other avid family travellers, learning has always been a part of the adventure. Every trip we’ve taken has taught us, kids and adults, something new. As we look forward to future journeys together, here are some of the exciting opportunities offered by Four Seasons to help us learn about – and from – local destinations and people.

WILD OCEAN ENCOUNTERS

Who needs a biology classroom – or a playground – when your family can explore the incredible marine life that surrounds Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, México? As part of its “Schoolcations” program, marine learning activities for kids include an expert-guided whale-watching tour, a sea foraging excursion and the chance to assist with the release of olive ridley sea turtle hatchlings.

At Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, families (including kids as young as 9) can keep an eye out for sea turtles and other marine life – including migrating humpback whales, in season – during a private outrigger canoe paddle. Championship-level guides teach you the basics and show how this ancient tradition continues to play a role in Hawaiian culture.

In a new partnership with WiseOceans, and with a new Resort marine biologist and educator, Louise Sabadel, Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is now more certain than ever to appeal to conservationists of all ages. Snorkelling the calm lagoon and reef is an easy way for multiple generations to discover local underwater life together.

STAYING FIT AND FOCUSED

Healthy bodies and healthy minds go hand in hand, so learning a new skill that strengthens physical and mental muscles is good for the whole family. At Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, kids as young as 4 can learn the traditional art of Thai kick-boxing (muay thai) from a professional boxer. Every member of the family will enjoy gazing out over the gulf from a hilltop ring, practising this sport that promotes flexibility, strength and coordination.

On the flip side, sometimes it’s important to concentrate on quiet minds and calm spirits. At Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, kids age 6 and older can develop both. Board a dhoni boat together and sail over to the Island Spa, where children can relax with treatments all their own, including oil blending, nourishing seaweeds, or yoga on land or sea. “Kids are never too young to learn the importance of self-care or the role of nature in our well-being,” says Spa Assistant Manager Angelica De Leon. “Our children’s treatments all include an educational aspect.”

And it’s easy to turn a sport your child already loves into a teachable moment. At Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort, sign your student up for a one-hour golf lesson with PGA professional Rod Cook, the Resort’s Director of Instruction, to learn different golf skill sets like chipping, putting and driving. Afterwards, explore the science behind the sport: Director of Golf Maintenance Stephen Tucker will explain the winning formula of water, fertilizer and care that goes into keeping the course in prime condition.

ARTS, CRAFTS AND CULTURE

From a fairly young age, many kids have had some exposure to ancient Greek mythology and culture. In Athens, a visit to local museums will show them how important pottery remains are to the archaeological record and our modern understanding of the era. Bring the stories to life and engage kids’ hands-on creativity with pottery lessons at Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens.

Prefer your art in 2D? Learn about Italian artists and the techniques used in their work when you try your hand at reproducing pieces by legends like Raphael and Caravaggio. The exclusive collaboration between Four Seasons Hotel Milano and the Pinacoteca di Brera museum includes a sketchbook, colouring kit and private tour options. “The children who participate are captured by the colours, by the thousands of stories that the paintings tell,” says Pinacoteca di Brera Deputy Manager Alessandra Quarto. “They are totally fascinated; they sit on the floor and listen, observe, draw.”

Or make art that takes to the sky: At Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay and Four Seasons Resort Nevis, on-site kite experts will help kids build their own creations to soar high and challenge others. Kites play a cultural role in both destinations; spring brings kite competitions in Nevis, and summer in Bali is the time to watch locals battling it out in the skies with kites up to 5 metres wide.

Inspire any budding chefs in your family with a hands-on French culinary experience – starting with a drive to Versailles to see the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, kitchen garden—with the Hotel’s Michelin-starred Chef Simone Zanoni. Or book a family lesson in Vietnamese cuisine at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An. The skills kids learn here from an expert chef, such as rolling rice paper, can add spice to mealtimes back home.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE

For kids, history books can be boring. Interactive activities bring the facts more vividly to life in experiences the adults can share. Pay a lantern-lit evening visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, exclusively arranged by Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC, where you’ll learn about the first U.S. president and explore spaces that aren’t open to the general public. “Mount Vernon looks like it was frozen in time during Washington’s life—it is truly living history,” says Concierge Supervisor Michael Chase. “No tour is duplicated from one family to the next; the guide tailors to the ages and curiosities of the children.”

At Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, a local expert will guide you on a walking tour along the Pearling Trail in the old city of Muharraq, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a glimpse into its history and its pearling traditions. Pair it with a family snorkelling or diving trip to search for fresh wild pearls.

If the legend of El Dorado has caught your children’s interest, a visit to Bogotá’s Museo del Oro is in order, and a helicopter tour over Lake Guatavita, arranged by Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogotá, can add a sense of place to the fabled city of gold. The lake was a sacred site for the indigenous Muisca civilization, where chiefs threw offerings including gold to the gods; the story grew into the myth of El Dorado.

For the ultimate adventure, the Four Seasons Private Jet may be just the ticket: The first family-friendly journey, African Wonders (December 28, 2021, to January 9, 2022), includes stops in seven countries and a visit to one of the world’s most compelling historical sites, Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza, with expert guides and special access. It’s just the type of experience to inspire your children’s love of learning, and your favourite family memories, for years to come.

Hold the Honeymoon: Why Your Next Girls’ Trip Should Be in Bora Bora

All the reasons honeymooners head to the idyllic French Polynesian island of Bora Bora still stand when you drop the couples component. You can be pampered in overwater spa suites, shop for black pearls at the source and frolic in a turquoise lagoon. So why not earmark it for your next girlfriend getaway?

We consulted local members of the team at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora for input on the ultimate itinerary, and their answers did not disappoint. Ready to dive in?

Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora

Shop, Sip and Take a Dip

Your first order of business is a no-brainer: Choose to stay in an open-air overwater bungalow suite. Each thatched-roof sanctuary, reminiscent of a screen saver sprung to life, is over 100 square metres (1,000 square feet) and outfitted with teak daybeds, a deep soaking tub and snorkelling gear – in the event you decide to step out your front door and go for a swim. There’s no time for squabbling over who gets the sofa bed versus the king; exquisite adventure awaits.

Kick off your stay with an “only at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora” exploit: the Lagoon Sanctuary Tour and coral grafting, led by French marine biologist Denis Schneider. “This amazing activity allows guests to actually contribute to our underwater ecosystem,” Concierge Rayanna Holman says. “Denis loves to share his research and knowledge with guests.” On the docket: cutting coral nubbins and then attaching them to GPS-tracked underwater structures to grow new coral colonies, as well as affixing coral to build itself up on doughnut-shaped forms in the Resort’s own Lagoon Sanctuary, where octopus, unicorn fish and even Picasso trumpet fish flourish.

It’s a great first-night dining choice for delicious sushi and Asian small plates, plus beautiful sunset views over Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia.

In the afternoon, browse the Resort’s boutique, MoeMoea (“dream” in Tahitian) – you’ll find everything from Roberta Roller Rabbit to Eres among the wares. “Our new boutique will feature 330 square metres [3,550 square feet] of high fashion, accessories and everything in between,” after its December opening, team member Ewa Poujade says. “It’s sure to be a highlight for girlfriends travelling together.”

Another is bound to be a twilight dinner with your friends – and that’s where Sunset Restaurant & Bar, lofted over crystalline water, comes in. On the menu: mahi mahi skewers, pineapple shrimp sushi rolls and passionfruit-poached baba cake for a sweet finish. “Sunset is a great first-night dining choice for delicious sushi and Asian small plates, plus beautiful sunset views over Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia,” Reservations Manager Maxi Zani says. “Start with the signature Mahana cocktail.” And when it’s a wrap, just stroll back to your bungalow.

Up the Endorphins

Start the day by hitting the tennis courts. At Four Seasons Bora Bora, that means donning your whites for a lesson with pro Joachim Arab, former tennis coach at Academie Tennis Alain Barrere in Pontet, France. “Joachim loves working with multiple guests at a time,” General Manager Maria Jagla says. “He can organize everything from a simple lesson to a clinic or even a small tournament.”

Afterwards, get some wind in your hair with a guided WaveRunner tour of the island, complete with lunch on white-sand Matira Beach. “It’s untraditional and absolutely the best way to see our island,” Holman says. “Matira Beach, where you’ll stop for lunch, is one of French Polynesia’s most beautiful beaches.”

Matira Beach, where you’ll stop for lunch, is one of French Polynesia’s most beautiful beaches.

Following a day of adventure, you and yours can while away the evening at Fare Hoa Beach Bar & Grill for dinner, and live music, right on the sand. Order a round of highly photogenic Shades of Blue cocktails, made with vodka, elderflower liqueur, blue curaçao, grapefruit juice, fresh mint leaves and lime juice. As for dinner, the shaved coconut salad and grilled Marquesas Islands spiny lobster with clarified butter are what Bora Bora dreams are made of.

The Ultimate Spa Retreat

Launch your third day in paradise at open-air Tere Nui, where a breakfast buffet awaits as early as dawn. This being French Polynesia, the options would suit any ardent Francophile: Think salmon eggs Benedict and lighter-than-air crêpes with Nutella and fresh berries on the side.

The best (and most restorative) way to proceed: a yoga session led by yogi Rajeeb Prajapati on a teak platform above the shimmering lagoon. After quieting your mind, report immediately to the Spa, where treatment beds are set above glass-floor panels for a clear line of sight into the lagoon below.

This colourful experience uses local pareos [wrap-around skirts] to stretch and manipulate the body, bringing incredible relief and increased range of motion.

Of the myriad blissful treatments, Spa Director Stephanie Cherbakow recommends the brand-new Pareo Ritual. “This colourful experience uses local pareos [wrap-around skirts] to stretch and manipulate the body, bringing incredible relief and increased range of motion,” she says. “And guests are able to keep the pareo as a souvenir.” The Trio of Gold Global Anti-Aging facial is another favourite.

End the day in mermaid fashion within the confines of a private thatched-roof cabana, where attendants anticipate your every need. Chilled towel and fresh fruit slices, anyone?

Snorkelling and Pearly Souvenirs

There’s arguably no better way to cap off a Bora Bora stay than diving deep – literally. Take a half-day Shark and Ray Snorkelling Tour, which affords the opportunity to feed sharks and stingrays in person, and then lunch on your guide’s motu. “This is the quintessential Bora Bora experience, and something I recommend to all of our guests,” Jagla says. “A guide takes you out to snorkel in three beautiful areas of the lagoon, where you get to see and interact with coral fish, rays and reef sharks.”

A guide takes you out to snorkel in three beautiful areas of the lagoon, where you get to see and interact with coral fish, rays and reef sharks.

Before you reluctantly begin to pack, stop at the ultimate source of Bora Bora souvenirs: Tahia Pearls, where you’ll find the black pearls Tahiti is known for. “Guests can learn all about Bora Bora’s signature indigenous treasure and do some shopping if they’re so moved,” Zani says. Spoiler alert: You will be so moved.

Get dressed up and take your goodbye dinner at Polynesian-meets-French boîte Arii Moana, where the seasonal menu is an ode to all things Bora Bora. You don’t want to miss the langoustine tails, steamed in lagoon water and served with fresh house-made gnocchi. Aptly named, The Exotic provides a decadent finale. Order one for the table and plan your next getaway between bites of shortbread, poached pineapple, passion cream and mango passion sorbet.

Deep Impact in Maldives

In this private submarine experience, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru gives you and a guest a first-class ticket to the bustling underworld of Baa Atoll, the Maldives’ only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Piloted excursions in DeepFlight’s first three-person submarine – the Super Falcon 3S – allow you to explore the reefs in the comfort of a pressurized, climate-controlled cabin with individual viewing domes affording 360-degree views.

You’ll cruise past coral and through kaleidoscopic schools of fish – and maybe even alongside sharks, turtles, stingrays or dolphins – while your knowledgeable pilot dispenses facts about the plants and animals that call this fascinating ecosystem home.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger in Hualalai

Triathlon training is tough. So why not do it in one of the most beautiful places on earth, under the tutelage of a six-time Ironman World Champion? Four times a year, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai offers the rare opportunity to train with Ironman Hall of Famer and master coach Dave Scott. Each five-day clinic includes intensive training in swimming, cycling, running, nutrition, strength and flexibility, plus video analysis and a personal consultation.

The 28,000-square-foot Hualalai Spa is at the ready with massage, whirlpools, saunas, steam rooms and cold plunges. But the greatest perk is your training ground. “Kona is such a beautiful place, and it makes training here all the more memorable,” Scott says. “We bike on roads that run between the green mountains and the sparkling blue ocean, run next to black lava rock fields and swim in the crystal-clear ocean alongside Hawaiian sea life. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is unique in that it has some of the most beautiful open-water swimming areas in the world, as well as an amazing 25-metre lap pool, so I can diversify my coaching in the two swimming environments.”

Paddleboarding in San Diego

Balancing Act in San Diego

Freshwater mingles with saltwater at Agua Hedionda Lagoon, an aquatic sanctuary teeming with wildlife just 15 minutes from Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara. These brackish waters are an irresistible environment for some 70 species of fish and 192 species of birds, from red-tailed hawks to hummingbirds. Experience this robust nature preserve via the Residence Club’s paddleboard adventure. You’ll take a Beau Lake paddleboard – a gel-coated mahogany masterpiece, essentially the Mercedes S-Class of paddleboards – that’s as comfortable for a beginner as it is for the accomplished rider.

“The adventure begins on the shore, where we get an orientation of the lagoon and a quick paddleboarding lesson,” says Resort Assistant Manager Joanna George. “We start early in the morning, when the water is the smoothest. It’s a calm and soothing ride. We often see fish jumping out of the water.”

Bora Bora snorkelling

Coral-Friendly Snorkelling in Bora Bora

At Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, it’s easy to find a lagoon teeming with tropical sea life – there’s one within the confines of the Resort. Sign up for a guided snorkel, or help biologists at the on-site research centre as they work to build and restore the ecosystem in and around the property. “Our main duty is to take care of the coral colonies, so we start by explaining to guests the importance of coral to the ecosystem,” says marine biologist Sylvain Lenoir. “We also tell them about the technology we use to help the coral grow, then we go snorkelling with them to show them the different techniques.

“Guests can adopt a GPS-enabled coral nubbin and track it as it grows on our artificial reef,” Lenoir says. “They can also be part of a worldwide study by documenting levels of coral bleaching as they explore the waters around the Resort.”

Kayaking in Costa Rica

Bay Watch in Costa Rica

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo fronts the Bay of Culebra in Costa Rica’s northwestern corner, and its calm, cerulean waters are ripe for exploring. The best way to get up close with local sea life? A guided kayak ride with the Resort’s on-site adventure staff. In your self-propelled vessel, you can paddle out to gain the best vantage of the island and its volcanic Guanacaste mountain range and tropical rainforest beyond. Humpback whales arrive to deliver their babies between August and December.

“We normally take guests to Nacascolo Beach, and on the way we sometimes have the humpback whales swimming beside us,” says Recreation Supervisor Alonso Rodríguez. “You might also see dolphins, spotted eagle rays, sting rays, devil rays and lots of fish. When we get to the beach we show you some of the animals we see in that area, like howler monkeys. Kayaking is very relaxing, and it allows people to disconnect.”

Swimming with sharks

Swim Meet in O‘ahu

If anyone has the right name for a career in marine biology, it’s Ocean Ramsey. A certified scuba instructor and professional free diver, the Hawaii native has made it her life’s work to foster understanding and appreciation of the ocean as a whole, but especially sharks. In Ramsey’s day job – running her own marine research and conservation company, One Ocean Research and Diving – she studies shark behaviour by swimming alongside them, and promotes their intelligence and important role in shaping ecosystems. (Photographs of her freediving with great whites are eye candy for her half-million Instagram followers.)

Guests of Four Seasons Resort O‘ahu at Ko Olina can join Ocean, or one of her crew, in a research trip to swim with sandbar or Galápagos sharks. You’ll get the low-down on shark biology, physiology and behaviour, then don a snorkel and climb down the swim ladder. “I find that no matter how much I talk to people about sharks, they don’t truly believe me until they see for themselves,” Ramsey says. “After experiencing the program, participants have a much more realistic perspective on how sharks behave and how we can adapt our behavior to peacefully coexist – both in the water and in the global community through conservation.”

Jetblades in Langkawi

Up and Away in Langkawi

You may have heard of jetpacks – high-tech backpacks that send you skyward with a hose full of rapidly moving water. Now behold Jetblades, small-scale wakeboards of sorts that use the same technology but allow you to spin, swoop, flip and swirl through the sky with more control. Four Seasons Resort Langkawi is the first resort in Malaysia to offer this thrilling experience. Strap into your boots and prepare for a wild ride over the Andaman Sea.
