Punta Mita: Call of the waves

Find your own eternal summer at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, México, where surfers of all skill levels can catch a good break. November to March is peak season at this Mexican Riviera hideaway, says TropicSurf Program Manager Donna Scherer, who oversees the property’s surfing excursions from a beachside surf shack. The rest of the year, the waves are less steep and longer.

The Resort’s Manzanilla Beach, a three-minute walk from The Surf Shack lounge on Las Cuevas Beach, offers calmer waves so beginners can feel at ease. The Cove, five minutes from the property by boat, is more suitable for experienced surfers, as is La Lancha, a 15-minute boat ride from the Resort.

“The sought-after El Faro is probably the most advanced wave we take guests to,” Scherer says of the cove within walking distance. “El Anclote, 10 minutes away and known as the Mexican Malibu, offers very gentle longboarding that runs for ages and is named after the classic world-class Malibu wave. Burros is about 20 minutes away by boat and can be great if conditions suit.”

All guests who book guided tours or surf lessons with TropicSurf can rent board if they don’t have their own, says Scherer. And “depending on what’s best for the day and guests’ surfing levels,” car trips can be arranged to breaks up to 45 minutes away.

If you’d rather observe the waves than ride them, set out on the Four Seasons Explorer for a sunset cruise, keeping your eyes peeled for dolphins and whales as you sip your champagne and take it all in.

Hualalai: The ultimate winter wedding destination

There are many reasons to love Hawaii: its Kona coffee, its traditional luau celebrations, its white-sand beaches and island greenery. It’s also home to the spectacular Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, where couples can tie the knot and extend the celebration across the property’s 800 acres.

“If you are picturing a wedding with a backdrop of lush island foliage, crystal-clear waters and unrivalled beauty by day and illuminated tiki torches, stellar sunsets and sparkly evening stars by evening, there is no destination more perfect than Four Seasons Resort Hualalai,” says Director of Special Events Melina Manchester. “Set on the exclusive Kona-Kohala Coast, it is what Hawaiian wedding dreams are made of.” Think ceremonies atop a black lava bluff and all-night receptions surrounded by royal poinciana trees, plumeria and red hibiscus.

“Hualalai is a little slice of paradise year round, but it’s especially magical during the winter due to warm temperatures and less crowded beaches on the Big Island,” says Manchester. “The quiet of the winter months makes the Resort feel intimate and worlds away from civilization – the perfect time to say ‘I do.’”

Nevis: From sea to table

Experienced divers can easily rattle off a list of destinations where they’ve taken to the sea in search of the bluest waters and most exotic schools of fish.

The wise ones have spent time at Four Seasons Resort Nevis. “The calm waters of the Caribbean are perfect for a day on the water,” says Kishandra Williams, assistant pool and beach manager. “The turquoise blue waters right off our Resort’s shoreline are like having your own private aquarium. Pinney’s Beach is home to an abundance of colourful fish and sea life waiting to be explored, with everything from starfish, sea turtles and stingrays to colourful schools of tropical fish. It’s truly awe-inspiring.”

Head to the water-sports desk to borrow some complimentary snorkel gear and walk just a few short steps from the beach into the water, where you’ll experience a variegated world of undersea marine life.

Back on land, sample some authentic local cuisine at On the Dune. The beachfront restaurant’s revamped menu features 95% local Nevisian ingredients, including fresh seafood caught straight from the Resort’s shores, plus homegrown vegetables, fruits and other provisions from local partner Indian Castle Farm.

Seychelles, Desroches Island: Sweet seclusion

If you’re really looking to unplug this winter, Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island is prime territory for a relaxing vacation. It’s the only resort on the island, which boasts 14 kilometres (9 miles) of white-sand beaches, and each guest suite and villa features a private swimming pool and daybed pavilion.

You’ll also have access to bicycles throughout your stay, meaning each day you can explore a new stretch of the coastline and find your very own beach. In addition to the two restaurants on-site, the Resort also offers The Deli, where takeaway picnic baskets can be prepared for each castaway day. Choose from cold cuts, pastries, sandwiches and desserts – and perhaps a bottle of wine.

The Ocean Club: A romantic winter hideaway

Sometimes all you need is a little time for just the two of you.

Enter The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas. “Our property is made for private celebrations; intimate vow renewals and proposals are very popular here, especially on the beach while the sun is setting,” says General Manager John Conway. During the winter months, he says, couples can still count on 75-degrees F weather and warm ocean waters to swim in.

Enjoy a couple’s massage overlooking the ocean, a private yoga session on the beach or your private balcony, or paddleboarding on the water. Relax together at the adults-only Versailles Pool. Later in the evening, be sure to savour a martini at the legendary Martini Bar and Lounge before beginning your romantic dinner at DUNE by Jean-Georges.

Whether you’re commemorating a special occasion or simply celebrating your time together, a private dinner for two in either the Versailles Gardens or directly on the beach offers a truly unforgettable evening. “It’s a beautiful dinner, set up with many candles and fresh-cut flowers, a four-course meal, a bottle of champagne, dedicated servers, and tiki torches and lanterns surrounding the area,” says Conway. “Whenever guests walk up to their dinner they are always in awe of the beauty of their surroundings – it’s an amazing experience.”

Maui: Celebrate in paradise

In Maui, you can enjoy sunshine and temperatures that hover in the 80s year round, making Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea a picture-perfect winter retreat. “Our island paradise truly provides a welcome warm break,” says Margaux Pfeiffer, director of Concierge and guest experience.

And while Maui is magical all year, the Resort elevates its offerings for the holiday season. From mid-December through early January, you can expect nightly Hanukkah festivities, Christmas tree room deliveries, Santa arriving via outrigger canoe, Kids For All Seasons themed night events and an unforgettable New Year’s Eve party complete with fireworks, all bound to make lifelong memories with loved ones.

“Beyond our perennial sunny shores, the winter months mark the peak season for humpback whale watching on Maui,” notes Pfeiffer. These majestic creatures return every year to Maui’s warm tropical waters to breed and give birth, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to watch their awe-inspiring displays of breaching, tail-slapping and singing. “Whale watching is a not-to-be-missed winter activity on Maui, and we make personalized recommendations for our guests to experience the whales in whichever way best fits them,” says Pfeiffer. Whether it’s a luxury catamaran for smooth sailing with delicious food and drinks or a private kayak off the shores of Wailea Beach with Maui Undersea Adventures – Pfeiffer’s personal favourite – there is a perfect excursion for every whale watcher.

Why Your Next Great Adventure Is on the Water

Why spend your entire vacation experience on solid ground? Four Seasons resorts around the world are extending their unparalleled hospitality with luxury dive boat charters. Whether it’s snorkelling or sunbathing you’re after, or both, we’ve compiled the ways you can change your perspective on paradise.

Koh Samui yacht

Thailand’s Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is home to 42 uninhabited islands ripe for exploration.

Koh Samui, Thailand

On Samui Island, guests at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui can extend their range with its two yachts. The Minor Affair, a 19.5-metre (64-foot) Sunseeker yacht, accommodates up to 12, with two cabins and a master suite. Its hydraulic swimming platform has a built-in shower, and a Bose sound system is ready to supply your sailing soundtrack.

The Resort’s 12.8-metre (42-foot) charter, the Siam Seas Explorer, has an outdoor deck where you can lie still in the sun. It also happens to be an island-hopping speedboat that can reach up to 44 knots (about 50 mph). The crew – a personal assistant and a deckhand – can provide picnics, full meals and, of course, champagne.

Trips aboard each yacht are fully customizable, but the Resort suggests several itineraries, such as a jaunt to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park – 42 uninhabited islands great for snorkelling, with a chance to dive through a cave to the saltwater Emerald Lake. The yachts also offer sunset cruises and tours around Koh Samui or to Thailand’s southernmost island, Koh Phangan, where every month up to 30,000 people flock to dance at its Full Moon Party.

“Our guests really enjoy the yacht trips to the Ang Thong marine park – it is a beautiful destination with a nice trek and secluded beach,” says Sean Mosher, General Manager of the Resort. “What’s equally impressive is the experienced and knowledgeable crew, especially our captain.”

Explore Lanai’s southern coastline aboard Lanai II, the Resort’s sloop-rigged sailing catamaran.

Lanai, Hawaii

When guests at Four Seasons Resort Lanai board Lanai II, a 65-foot (20-metre) sloop-rigged sailing catamaran, they’ll experience the pristine waters surrounding Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island in complete luxury. Set off for a three-hour snorkel sail to Kaunolu on the southern shore. This heritage site was King Kamehameha’s summer retreat, and the waters were a favourite fishing spot of his royal entourage. Swim along coastal reefs teeming with brilliantly coloured fish and wildlife – and perhaps catch a glimpse of humpback whales that frequent the waters seasonally, from December to mid-April. Snorkel gear, wetsuits and stand-up paddleboards are all provided, as is a picnic lunch on board before heading back to shore.

For an unforgettable evening, take Lanai II out for a two-hour sunset cruise to sip cocktails as the sun falls below the horizon, enjoy delicious pupus (appetizers) and watch schools of spinner dolphins frolic in the surf. Guests can also book a private charter on Lanai I, the Resort’s 50-foot (15-metre) sailing catamaran, to snorkel, scuba-dive, fish, whale-watch, or just relax and take in views of the beautiful Lanai coastline.

“An ocean adventure is one of the best ways to explore the southern coastline of Lanai,” says Captain Kamalani Ranis of Lanai Ocean Sports. “Just minutes from the harbour are some of the best dive sites in the world, resident spinner dolphins and some of the highest sea cliffs in the world. All experiences with our Lanai-based crew are unique.”

A private boat makes its way around the coast of Bora Bora

The Resort’s Andreyale Bateaux Taxis were modelled after 1920s New York City commuter boats.

Bora Bora, South Pacific

At Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, up to 20 people can embark on two-hour excursions aboard a custom-built, 11.8-metre (39-foot) Andreyale Bateaux Taxi. The taxi boats – Heinoanoa, Leana, Poeiti and Vaihani – were inspired by New York City commuter boats that, in the 1920s, transported Wall Street executives from Long Island to New York’s Financial District. But the 21st-century models are made with mahogany, teak and stainless steel, and they stick to the South Pacific.

The Andreyales serve as transfers between the Resort and Bora Bora Airport, and are also available for private charters to take guests snorkelling with rays and sharks, deep-sea fishing, or touring the area with a local guide. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora has its own fleet for one-hour to full-day excursions. The latter choice is easily the most popular.

“A private Sunset Sushi and Champagne Cruise is an incredibly romantic experience,” says Romain Chanet, General Manager of the Resort. “Not only do you get to see the beautiful colours of Bora Bora’s lagoon and sky change with the sunset, but you get to do so with your loved one while enjoying the perfect pairing of fresh sushi and champagne. It’s truly one of Bora Bora’s most memorable experiences.”

Stay Another Day: Fort Lauderdale

Miles of postcard-worthy beaches and a Venice-style network of winding canals and inland waterways make Fort Lauderdale a seafarer’s paradise. And while the South Florida city is one of the world’s top yachting destinations, there’s plenty more on offer than just beautiful weather and an inviting turquoise sea.

Plan your visit to Fort Lauderdale

If you’re lucky enough to be in Fort Lauderdale, consider staying an extra day to get beneath the surface of the city. You might find things you didn’t even know you were looking for – a speakeasy with live music, a local farmers market, a café tucked away in a garden. We asked the team at Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Fort Lauderdale – including celebrated chef Brandon Salomon from the Hotel’s own buzzy hotspot, Evelyn’s – for their favourite things to do with an extra hour, afternoon or entire day.

Morning: I love to start my mornings off at Magnolia Caffee, a quaint coffee shop surrounded by a white picket fence in the middle of Fort Lauderdale. When you walk through the charming blue window-paned door, you’re immediately greeted by the smells of java and fresh pastries. They serve one of my favourite iterations of avocado toast.

Afternoon: After a brisk walk up and down the 2-mile stretch of Fort Lauderdale Beach, I head over to Las Olas Boulevard for a stroll and to window-shop. Ya Mas! Taverna is a cute new Greek spot. I love the libations there, and they make an amazing Greek salad.

Evening: No Man’s Land is a small hidden gem that feels like a speakeasy. When you pull into the Winn-Dixie parking lot, you wouldn’t suspect the most unassuming little building houses such an incredible bar. Their Monday live jazz nights are phenomenal.

Morning: After an outdoor workout at Hardy Park, I reward myself with an Iced Oat Mylk-iato from Circle House Coffee. It’s made with maple syrup–infused oat milk, sugar-free vanilla and a double shot of their Signature Fifty-Five espresso blend, then topped with cinnamon.

Afternoon: Being a chef, I am always exploring local farmers markets. The Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood has great tropical fruit from vendors. Passion fruit is a must-buy when in season.

Evening: Coconuts is a casual restaurant on the Intracoastal Waterway where I like to dine. You could dock your boat right outside the restaurant and enjoy a great meal with friends or family. For an after-dinner cocktail, I like to visit Mama Hank’s, a hidden speakeasy, and Rhythm & Vine, a funky bar with an outdoor beer garden.

Morning: Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale – also known as the Las Olas Riverwalk – is a beautiful outdoor entertainment area with a park that runs alongside the water. I enjoy spending mornings strolling through the area and seeing all the boaters getting ready for the day.

Afternoon:  Coffee and lunch at The Alchemist in Wilton Manors, a gated artist community, is such an indulgence. They use as many fresh, local ingredients as possible, and roast their own coffee on site.

Evening:  I particularly love the FATVillage Arts District in Flagler Village. You can meet local artists here and purchase their creations and try some amazing dishes from local food trucks. Dinner is either at Heritage for authentic Italian, Christina Wan’s for amazing Chinese dumplings, or Sistrunk Marketplace & Brewery, a hip food hall.

Director of Spa and Wellness

Morning: If it’s a sunny morning, I can’t resist a yacht-gazing scenic river walk to Ann’s Florist & Coffee Bar on Las Olas Boulevard for a curbside breakfast of quiche and espresso. Since I used to be a florist, I never leave without fresh blooms to refresh my vases at home.

Afternoon: Starting at Daniel Popper’s Thrive sculpture of a gigantic figure whose chest is an ivy-lined archway, I gallery-hop along Las Olas Boulevard. I live in the Arts and Entertainment District downtown, so I often take in a matinee at the IMAX Theater in the Museum of Discovery and Science or an early show at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Evening: I typically end up at my favourite intimate-dining gem, LBC Las Olas, an American-French bistro with the best outdoor seats and people-watching.

General Manager

Morning: On the weekends, I enjoy riding my bike along the Riverwalk and heading to O-B House for their one-of-a-kind, oven-baked pancakes that are made from scratch. The blueberry-and-corn pancake is my favourite.

Afternoon: Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is an urban oasis known as “Fort Lauderdale’s Central Park” that sits between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. I go here to hike, then reward myself with a relaxing picnic at the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens.

Evening: A great night for me is a show at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts followed by a nightcap at No Man’s Land. Their No Man’s Old Fashioned with toasted coconut syrup and banana liqueur, and the off-menu Espresso Martini, are my usual go-tos.
