Why Your Next Great Adventure Is on the Water

Why spend your entire vacation experience on solid ground? Four Seasons resorts around the world are extending their unparalleled hospitality with luxury dive boat charters. Whether it’s snorkelling or sunbathing you’re after, or both, we’ve compiled the ways you can change your perspective on paradise.

Koh Samui yacht

Thailand’s Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is home to 42 uninhabited islands ripe for exploration.

Koh Samui, Thailand

On Samui Island, guests at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui can extend their range with its two yachts. The Minor Affair, a 19.5-metre (64-foot) Sunseeker yacht, accommodates up to 12, with two cabins and a master suite. Its hydraulic swimming platform has a built-in shower, and a Bose sound system is ready to supply your sailing soundtrack.

The Resort’s 12.8-metre (42-foot) charter, the Siam Seas Explorer, has an outdoor deck where you can lie still in the sun. It also happens to be an island-hopping speedboat that can reach up to 44 knots (about 50 mph). The crew – a personal assistant and a deckhand – can provide picnics, full meals and, of course, champagne.

Trips aboard each yacht are fully customizable, but the Resort suggests several itineraries, such as a jaunt to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park – 42 uninhabited islands great for snorkelling, with a chance to dive through a cave to the saltwater Emerald Lake. The yachts also offer sunset cruises and tours around Koh Samui or to Thailand’s southernmost island, Koh Phangan, where every month up to 30,000 people flock to dance at its Full Moon Party.

“Our guests really enjoy the yacht trips to the Ang Thong marine park – it is a beautiful destination with a nice trek and secluded beach,” says Sean Mosher, General Manager of the Resort. “What’s equally impressive is the experienced and knowledgeable crew, especially our captain.”

Explore Lanai’s southern coastline aboard Lanai II, the Resort’s sloop-rigged sailing catamaran.

Lanai, Hawaii

When guests at Four Seasons Resort Lanai board Lanai II, a 65-foot (20-metre) sloop-rigged sailing catamaran, they’ll experience the pristine waters surrounding Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island in complete luxury. Set off for a three-hour snorkel sail to Kaunolu on the southern shore. This heritage site was King Kamehameha’s summer retreat, and the waters were a favourite fishing spot of his royal entourage. Swim along coastal reefs teeming with brilliantly coloured fish and wildlife – and perhaps catch a glimpse of humpback whales that frequent the waters seasonally, from December to mid-April. Snorkel gear, wetsuits and stand-up paddleboards are all provided, as is a picnic lunch on board before heading back to shore.

For an unforgettable evening, take Lanai II out for a two-hour sunset cruise to sip cocktails as the sun falls below the horizon, enjoy delicious pupus (appetizers) and watch schools of spinner dolphins frolic in the surf. Guests can also book a private charter on Lanai I, the Resort’s 50-foot (15-metre) sailing catamaran, to snorkel, scuba-dive, fish, whale-watch, or just relax and take in views of the beautiful Lanai coastline.

“An ocean adventure is one of the best ways to explore the southern coastline of Lanai,” says Captain Kamalani Ranis of Lanai Ocean Sports. “Just minutes from the harbour are some of the best dive sites in the world, resident spinner dolphins and some of the highest sea cliffs in the world. All experiences with our Lanai-based crew are unique.”

A private boat makes its way around the coast of Bora Bora

The Resort’s Andreyale Bateaux Taxis were modelled after 1920s New York City commuter boats.

Bora Bora, South Pacific

At Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, up to 20 people can embark on two-hour excursions aboard a custom-built, 11.8-metre (39-foot) Andreyale Bateaux Taxi. The taxi boats – Heinoanoa, Leana, Poeiti and Vaihani – were inspired by New York City commuter boats that, in the 1920s, transported Wall Street executives from Long Island to New York’s Financial District. But the 21st-century models are made with mahogany, teak and stainless steel, and they stick to the South Pacific.

The Andreyales serve as transfers between the Resort and Bora Bora Airport, and are also available for private charters to take guests snorkelling with rays and sharks, deep-sea fishing, or touring the area with a local guide. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora has its own fleet for one-hour to full-day excursions. The latter choice is easily the most popular.

“A private Sunset Sushi and Champagne Cruise is an incredibly romantic experience,” says Romain Chanet, General Manager of the Resort. “Not only do you get to see the beautiful colours of Bora Bora’s lagoon and sky change with the sunset, but you get to do so with your loved one while enjoying the perfect pairing of fresh sushi and champagne. It’s truly one of Bora Bora’s most memorable experiences.”

Go Deeper: Our Top Diving Destinations

Avid scuba divers Charles and Verena Lasvigne have spent the past decade travelling the world and exploring a bevy of exotic undersea spots along the way. Charles is the Director of Food and Beverage at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles, and Verena manages the Resort’s spa, as well as several others in the Middle East and Africa region. The couple achieved their diving certifications during sojourns to different
Four Seasons properties (Charles in Bali and Verena in the Maldives), and they’ve been hooked ever since.

They view scuba diving as an essential escape from the challenges of everyday life. “When you’re starting to dive, you learn about control and a world of silence,” Charles says. “You can connect with yourself, and you discover so much life that you had no clue existed.” Here, Charles and Verena take us on an exclusive diving tour, sharing their favourite sites around the globe and what to do when you’re back on land.

UNDERWATER: A WORLD WAR II SHIPWRECK

Divers explore a WWII shipwreck of the coast of Bali

Charles made his first official dive in Bali. Today, the site of the USS Liberty shipwreck is still one of his favourite places to get under the water. (The Liberty was sunk by a torpedo during World War II and is considered one of the top dive spots in the country.) “I was very spoiled that that was my first dive,” he says, citing the array of amazing corals. When swimming in and out of the ship, which is only about 16 feet (5 metres) below the surface at its shallowest point, you can also expect to see mola, a rare species of giant sunfish that weigh an average of 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms).

ON LAND: LOTUS PONDS AND WATER TEMPLES

Guests explore the rooftop Lily Pond at Four Seasons Bali

Above sea level, Charles and Verena recommend a romantic dinner amid the water lilies and lotus flowers of the Rooftop Lotus Pond at the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan. Charles proposed to Verena there on the day he received his dive certification. Verena also suggests a day trip to one of Bali’s many water temples, specifically Tirta Empul, the holy spring water temple. “It’s a beautiful place,” Verena says. “Amazing and full of spirituality.”

UNDERWATER: WHALE SHARKS AND MANTA RAYS

Divers swim alongside a whale shark in the waters of the Maldives

“For us, if there was only one place in the world to go diving, it would be the Maldives,” Charles says. The unforgettable highlight: visiting a manta ray cleaning station. Manta rays come to areas with strong currents and rocks to clean themselves off. Here, it’s possible to see up to 40 rays at once. And you don’t have to be a strong swimmer – simply sit on the ocean floor, hold onto a rock and watch the party go by. “The mantas are very gracious and elegant in their movements,” Verena says. And if you’re interested in seeing more ocean life while staying at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, the Resort provides beepers to alert you when mantas and whale sharks are within view.

ON LAND: TRANSPORTIVE SPA EXPERIENCES

A spa expert at the Four Seasons Maldives provides sound therapy.

For Verena, a spa aficionado, the best land-based attraction in the Maldives is the Resort’s Spa and Ayurvedic Retreat. Stretching from the heart of the island to the middle of the lagoon, the spa has four glass-floor treatment rooms so you have a window into the sea life below as you unwind. At the Ayurvedic Retreat, you’ll meet with expert physicians who design custom treatments to address your particular needs. “The energy in the spa is just incredible,” Verena says. “It’s a healing experience.”

UNDERWATER: ST PIERRE ISLAND

The waters of Seychelles are filled with vibrant reefs.

As Seychelles residents, Charles and Verena recommend taking a day trip from the Resort to go island-hopping — the area is home to more than 100 islands where you can dive and sightsee at the same time. Make time to go underwater at St Pierre Island. “It’s essentially a little rock with two coconut trees,” Charles says, “but the water around it is like an aquarium.” In addition to the vibrant corals, expect to catch a glimpse of hawksbill and green turtles.

ON LAND: COCONUTS AND GIANT TORTOISES

From the capital city of Victoria, take a ferry to Praslin Island. There, at the UNESCO World Heritage site Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, you can see coco de mer trees, which produce the uniquely shaped coconuts that are the national symbol of Seychelles. Next, head to Curieuse Island where you can have a barbecue picnic and spot giant tortoises in the wild.

UNDERWATER: CATALINA ISLAND

Divers swim near a hammerhead shark in Costa Rica

A one-hour boat ride from the beach at Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo will take you to Catalina Island, another of the Lasvignes’ favourite dive spots. You may even see a whale on the trip over – Charles and Verena saw a whale and her calf pass by on their most recent trip. Once you get underwater, you’ll see large devil rays and hammerhead sharks. But there’s no need to be afraid, Charles says. “Our dive instructor told us they would pretty much ignore us, and there were no problems.”

ON LAND: ZIP LINES AND HOT SPRINGS

A woman zip-lines in Costa Rica

Though there are plenty of great activities to keep you busy in Costa Rica, the Lasvignes say it’s best to soak up the natural surroundings as much as possible. Their recommendation: Take a car to the nearby Arenal Volcano. “On the way, you’ll travel through a coffee field where you can get a taste of the local brew,” Verena says. Once you’re sufficiently caffeinated, zoom among the treetops via a series of zip lines, the longest of which is almost 2,500 feet (760 metres). Charles and Verena suggest making time for relaxation in the warmth of the area’s volcanic natural hot springs.

Solar Eclipse 2017: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event You Can’t Miss

It will be the astronomical event of a lifetime, but to see it you have to be in the right place at the right time. On August 21, 2017, the moon will pass between our planet and the sun and block the sun’s light in a total solar eclipse.

Though a total eclipse is visible from somewhere on Earth every two to three years, many of them pass over hard-to-get-to spots in Antarctica or mid-ocean. The shadow of this eclipse will run diagonally across the United States throughout the day, from northern Oregon to central South Carolina.

Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, get yourself to a location where you can see the eclipse. – Ryan Hennessey, astrophysicist

From an astronomy lesson over a Champagne brunch to a gourmet picnic on a rooftop lounge, here the top ways to celebrate this especially rare occasion.

Gaze upward in Jackson Hole

On the morning of August 21, as the moment of total eclipse approaches (expected around 11:42 am in Jackson Hole), astrophysicist Ryan Hennessy will lead a viewing party near the top of the Teton mountain range.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole, framed by the breathtaking Teton mountain range, sits right in the path of the eclipse.

“Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, get yourself to a location where you can see the eclipse,” says Ryan Hennessy, astrophysicist and owner of the stargazing company Teton Skies, which is partnering with the Resort for a private solar eclipse viewing party.

From 9:00 to 2:00 pm, guests will sip Bloody Marys and mimosas at Rendezvous Lodge, 9,095 feet (2,772 metres) above Jackson Hole Valley, and safely view the eclipse through Teton Skies’ hydrogen-alpha solar telescopes.

If you are unable to attend the event but can get yourself to Jackson Hole, you can still enjoy a mountain-framed view of the eclipse (and breakfast) from a seat on the patio at Westbank Grill, or a lounge chair by the pool. The total eclipse is expected to appear here around 11:36 am and last for two minutes and 20 seconds.

Picnic under the eclipse in St. Louis

For the best views of the eclipse in St. Louis, pick up a gourmet picnic and head to a nearby park.

Also in the shadow’s track is St. Louis, Missouri, a city that hasn’t seen a full solar eclipse since 1442 and won’t see another until 2505.

Although Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis isn’t in the path of totality, the full eclipse can be viewed from several parks nearby, including Jefferson Barracks Park, Castlewood State Park and Lone Elk Park. And the Hotel can help prepare you for your adventure.

A special eclipse-viewing offer, St. Louis Solar Eclipse Escape includes a one-night stay in Arch-view accommodations and two pairs of solar viewing glasses. Book this experience and our chefs will also prepare a gourmet picnic basket for you – think freshly baked bread, local artisanal cheese, sandwiches from Cielo’s kitchen and a bottle of wine – that you can enjoy under the changing sky.

In St. Louis, the partial eclipse is expected to begin around 11:50 am and the full eclipse around 1:18 pm.

Take a day trip near Atlanta

A partial eclipse will occur in Atlanta around 2:35 pm.

Farther east, Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta is just a short drive away from the path of totality. For the best views, head to Hart State Park or Vogel State Park.

You can find partial views that are even closer, like the pool deck at the Hotel or nearby parks in the city, including Piedmont Park and Centennial Olympic Park. And the Hotel’s Tesla can transport guests to any desired viewing spot within a 6-mile radius.

Regardless of where you choose to enjoy the eclipse, the Hotel’s kitchen stands ready to pack you a gourmet picnic you can enjoy with or without sunlight.

Expert tips for enjoying the eclipse

Depending on location, this solar blackout could last six or seven minutes – quite a long time, considering that the shadow will be racing across the continent at 1,100 to 5,000 miles per hour.

Once the sun is fully eclipsed, those gazing space-wards will have an opportunity to view it like never before. “This is a very rare opportunity to see the corona – the outermost region of the sun’s atmosphere,” Hennessey says. The corona is a “wispy plasma” of electrically charged particles that are millions of degrees hotter than the surface of the sun itself.

“It would be like if the air surrounding a light bulb [was] many thousands of times hotter than the surface of the glass,” he adds. “We think that has a lot to do with the magnetic fields, but it’s an incredible mystery.” And when the brightest parts of the sun are dimmed by the location of the moon, the corona will become visible to the naked eye.

Whether you’re observing this astronomical event from Grand Teton National Park, St. Louis, Atlanta or your own back yard, do so safely with a pair of eclipse glasses to protect your eyes. No one should ever look directly at the sun without special eyewear. You can remove your glasses briefly once the sun is obscured by the moon and get a better look at the corona.

“This is an incredible moment,” Hennessey says. “Many people, once they see [an eclipse], they end up chasing them all over the world.”

The eclipse’s path of totality will race by three Four Seasons destinations:
Jackson Hole, St. Louis and Atlanta.
